The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a vibrant two-day Open Day event themed "Space Beyond Space" on 11 and 12 October. The arts facilities at HKADC’s Wong Chuk Hang venue will be open to the general public, offering a variety of arts activities and experiences including exhibitions, open studios, workshops, archive explorations, and more.

The Open Day invites the public to explore the meaning and possibilities of arts spaces. Through hands-on participation, exchange and interaction with artists, visitors can discover how the arts extend "beyond space" and integrate naturally with everyday life. Additionally, the Open Day aims to introduce the public to the work and journey of HKADC, reflecting on its growth and development over the past three decades. It showcases how HKADC continues to push boundaries, connect with the community, support artists, and fulfill its visions and missions of promoting the arts in Hong Kong.

The SHOWCASE: "Arts in the City: Our Southerly Days"

Arts in the City, presented by the HKADC, is a project that integrates arts, culture, and tourism, aiming to engage the public and visitors of Hong Kong in exploring the nooks and crannies of the city, discovering the history and culture of local communities from a fresh perspective.

Having walked through the lanes of Tai Hang, savored stories in Yuen Long, and taken a stroll along the Lam Tsuen River in Tai Po in the past editions, the fourth stop of Arts in the City returns to Hong Kong Island, guiding the public to uncover the stories of the Southern District—where the HKADC is settled down. “Our Southerly Days" invites public to step into a journey across time, memory, and space, experienced through diverse artistic mediums and seen through the eyes of artists who have lived, grown up, or worked in the Southern District.

Before its official opening on 14th October, the SHOWCASE will premiere works by the creation team “Deep Food” and artists May Seewah and LeonLollipop during the Open Day, alongside workshops that allow visitors to take part, rediscover this vibrant community through a renewed lens, and celebrate the aesthetics of everyday life rooted in place.

Arts Studios: Discovering a Fresh Wave of Creatives

The “ADC Artspace (Landmark South, Wong Chuk Hang)” recently welcomed a new cohort of artist tenants in this August! During the Open Day, over 20+ arts studios will open their doors to the public, showcasing the charm of creation. Some studios will also host arts demonstrations and workshops. Visitors can step into the artists' daily creative spaces, witness the process behind the artwork, and engage directly with the artists to experience diverse inspirations and ideas firsthand.

Special Sections: Triple Retrospective – Witnessing the Journey and Continuity

As part of the Open Day, three specially themed sections have been set up to not only offer a reflective look at the development and achievements of HKADC over the past 30 years, but also spotlight the journey of the "ADC Arts Space Scheme", highlighting how the “ADC Artspace Scheme” has consistently supported the development of local artists by providing various types of studios.

1. Art Throwback : 30 Years of ADC Archives: A selection of archives, images, and records since HKADC’s establishment will be on view, illustrating how HKADC has moved forward together with the development of arts in Hong Kong.

2. "Where Art Begins" - Throwback of ADC Artspace: Inviting the public to explore the development journey of the “ADC Arts Space Scheme” spanning over a decade, while browsing the selected items and works of past tenant artists.

3. Former Tenant Artist Returns – Reimagining Arts Space: Artist Ting Lok-yung Lawrence Tomos, a beneficiary of the Scheme, returns to the arts space during the Open Day to present his new works, created using bamboo weaving as the medium. This section also invites visitors to participate in thinking, designing, and extending the artwork, collectively contributing imagination and ideas to the piece, and envisioning the potentials of arts spaces together.

Arts Information Centre

The Arts Information Centre (AIC) collects material related to the arts development in Hong Kong, including activities funded, supported or organised by the HKADC. It aims to preserve the story of local arts development and serve as a window for the public to better understand the growth of arts in Hong Kong. During the Open Day, visitors are invited to explore selected collections and materials from past arts project archives, which offer a glimpse into Hong Kong’s arts history.

Landmark South X Wong Chuk Hang Arts Community

Creative brand ditto ditto, who is also also based in Wong Chuk Hang, has been invited to design and produce exclusive souvenirs, which will be gifted to eligible visitors during the Open Day. The souvenirs enables visitors to take creativity home and carry the inspiration with them. Souvenirs are limited and are available on a first-come first served basis while stocks last, so don't miss out!

Additionally, Landmark South, the building where the HKADC is located, will host its open day on 11 October. Galleries and creative tenants throughout the building will also open their doors in various formats, welcoming visitors to experience a vibrant mix of arts and cultural activities. Snacks will be served and live busking performances will take place in the public areas of Landmark South, offering everyone a chance to experience the warmth and creative charm of the Wong Chuk Hang in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Landmark South Open Day Event Details

The Landmark South Open Day will feature a rich variety of arts and cultural experiences, including live busking performances, trial sessions of the emerging sport pickleball, ballet work shops, tea appreciation experiences eco workshops at the Urban Farm, art exhibitions and more. All activities are free of charge, and complimentary popcorn and drinks will also be available at the event. Be part of this special celebration in the Southern District!
